State Tournament Action - Day 1

The MHSAA State Tournament kicked off on Friday with six games, a quartet of 2A games and a pair of 3A games. Friday as a strong day for the North teams as they sweep all six games.

S.V. Marshall 61 William Sullivan 47
In an all Holmes County tilt the Tigers from Tchula used a balanced attack to wear down the Yellowjackets from Durant and advance to the 2A championship game. Tamarcio Wilson and Raheem Hogan scored 14, Jamahl Jackson scored 12 and Marquis Vance scored 8 points each to spark the Tigers. The youthful Yellowjackets had no player in double figures but had three players with 9 points.
Baldwyn 53 Bay Springs 41
The undersized Bearcats from North MS used a stifling second half defensive effort to reach the 2A finals. Jr. Dee Gates 18 points and 10 rebounds sparked the Bearcats effort as they held the bigger Bulldogs to only 14 second half points. Gates was supported by Tevin Lindsay with 14 points and Duke Upshaw with 10. The Bulldogs' only double figure scorer was Sr. Eric Bender with 11 points.
Booneville 59 Bailey Magnet 55
In a game that was not decided to the final seconds the defending state champion Blue Devils held of the Knights from the Capitol City to return to the 3A championship game. Sr. Darius Leach made 3 of 4 free throws in the final minute to help the defending champs hold off the Knights. Booneville was led by Jr. Kenny Paul Geno's 22 points and 10 rebounds. Leach scored 14 points and Sr. Keldrick Lesley added 13 points. The Knights, who hurt their cause as they missed 5 of 7 free throws in the final minutes of the game, were led by Jr. Iury Dixon with 18 points and Jau'Quaylon Wilson with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Lee Montgomery added 11 points for the Knights.
Girls Action:
New Site 55 Bassfield 45
Behind Morgan Pearson's 22 points and 9 rebounds and Christy Clark's 17 points and 10 rebounds the Lady Royals moved on to their third straight 2A championship game. Bassfield was led by Starla Daggan's 13 points and 9 rebounds.
Walnut 60 Taylorsville 50
The Lady Wildcats dominated the fourth quarter to upset the consensus no. 1 Lady Tartars. The Lady Wildcats outscored Taylorsville 22-9 in final stanza to advance to the 2A state championship game. Walnut was led by Presley Pulse with 19 points. Wynisha Adams and Taylor Doyle added 12 points each for the Lady Wildcats. Taylorsville was led by Cocoa Bender and Tamesha Horne with 16 points each,
Ripley 55 Southeast Lauderdale 44
In an all Lady Tiger tilt the defending champions from Ripley retuned to the 3A championship game behind Becca Ruckes 18 points an Jayla Childs' 17 points and 10 rebounds. Southeast Lauderdale was led by Kamesha Pringle with 14 points.
