Magnolia Preps releases the MP Top 13
The first week of prep football is in the books and MagnoliaPreps.com unveils it's MP Top 13, these are the teams that the publishers and staff feel are the top teams in the Magnolia State.
1) South Panola (5A) – The winning streak now stands at 46 after a hard fought contest against No. 4 Clarksdale. South Panola downed the Delta's best team by a score of 19-13 in one of the closest contest during the streak. Things won't get much easier this week as the Tigers from Moss Point roll into town. Moss Point is a program on the rise, but this isn't the year they take down South Panola.
2) Wayne County (4A) – The War Eagles were very impressive this past week in a dominating 27-7 win over No. 12 George County. WC utilized a balanced attack taking down the Rebels and are led by exciting signal caller Drexler Johnson. This week previously suspended WR Kenneth Whigham is expected to play against No. 5 Madison Central. This is expected to be Wayne County's stiffest test of the regular season. This is a game that is just too close to call.
3) Oak Grove (5A) – The Warrior's sport one of the state's most exciting offensives led by talented signal caller Kirk Lance. Last week the Warriors raced by Gulfport to the tune of 42-20. This week they travel to Northeast Jones. Why is this game even being played? The Warriors are in need of some major schedule upgrades.
4) Clarksdale (4A) – Nobody has pushed South Panola harder in the past 46 games than did the Wildcats this past week. SP won the game, but Clarksdale sent a clear message to the rest of Class 4A, "We're for real.". The young squad will travel to Greenville this week and should take out some frustration.
5) Madison Central (5A) – The Jaguars needed OT to defeat the defending 5A South State Champs (Meridian) 20-13 this past week. That should serve as notice, the Jags will be a major player in 5A this season. This week they will head south to take on No. 2 Wayne County in the state's most highly anticipated game of the week. This game is just too close to call.
6) West Point (4A) – The defending 4A State Champs played a thriller this past Friday edging Nouxbee County 10-8. But, don't let the close game fool you. Player for player WP has as much speed as anyone in the state. This week the Wave plays at Columbus. Don't expect a letdown this week as the Wave Rolls.
7) West Jones (4A) – The Mustangs downed Lawrence County 28-14 in opening weekend action and were impressive in doing so. This week they play Class 3A traditional power Magee. This would be a lot more interesting of a game had Magee's best player not transferred to Oak Grove over the summer. The Mustangs have too much for an Andrew McGee led Trojans.
8) Hazlehurst (3A) – Clearly the class of 3A this year, Hazlehurst features one of the states most explosive backfields. Hazlehurst didn't play this past week and will open with Wilkinson County. Former NFL standout Vernon Perry makes his debut as head coach for the Indians.
9) Oxford (4A) – Oxford started the season on the right foot pounding Corinth 44-7 in opening weekend action. This week don't expect the competition to be much stiffer as the Chargers host New Albany. This is another team that is in major need of a schedule upgrade. How about Oxford and Oak Grove getting a series set up for next year?
10) Picayune (4A) – The Maroon Tide may be the best the Gulf Coast has to offer this year. A steller defensive effort helped Coach Dodd Lee's troops collar Moss Point 14-3 in opening weekend action. This week they should dispatch of Harrison Central. Picayune looks to be a team on the rise.
11) West Lauderdale (4A) - The Knights opened the '06 season with a 25-7 win over rival SE Lauderdale. Talented QB Austin Davis led his Knights to a 12-1 record in '05 after moving up from Class 3A the year before. This week they host Newton County who they beat 40-12 last season.
12) George County (5A) - We're not quite ready to write the Rebels off after a less than stellar showing against the state's No. 2 ranked team. The 27-7 wake-up call against Wayne County should inspire the Rebels to make a statement against the rival Greene County Wildcats this week.
13) Northwest Rankin (5A) – Could this be the year the Cougars to break through? With a group of talented skill players and a huge offensive line, expect NWR to score some points. They edged a talented Kosciusko squad 36-29 in opening week action. The Cougs can put up some points, but the defense will have to improve this week against crosstown rival Pearl Pirates.
Other programs that were in consideration for Top 13 honors listed alphabetically: Biloxi (5A), Charleston (3A), Jackson Prep (AAA), Lumberton (2A), McComb (4A), Petal (4A) and Provine (4A).
