Favre shatters state records as Rocks roll

On a crisp autumn night deep in the piney woods of Southeast Mississippi everyone in the stadium new that it could be a special night. St. Stanislaus (Bay St. Louis, Miss.) senior Dylan Favre was closing in on Mississippi career passing records. He needed three touchdown passes and 381 yards to etch his name in the record books.

Last year he set set the state record for touchdown passes in a single season.

In addition to the records potential falling the winner of this contest between the hone standing Greene County (Leakesville, Miss.) and St. Stanislaus would be in the drivers seat for the Region 8-4A title.

Things got off to a fast start in the game as Greene County's quarterback Mitchell Brown got the scoring started early when he called his own number for a 62-yard run from the first play from scrimmage, the PAT was good and the Wildcats led 7-0.

Scoring points has never been an issue for Favre and the Rock-a-Chaws. The talented signal caller directed his team on a drive that ended with a 44-yard scoring strike from Favre to Joe Klein. On the Rocks next possession Farve connected with his favorite target Krisjon Wilkerson on a 3-yard scoring strike to go up 14-7.

The pass to Wilkerson tied Favre with North Ponotoc great Cliford Davis with 104 career touchdown passes.

After a defensive stand by the Rocks, Favre and the offense had the ball for the third time in the opening quarter. Favre lead the team back down the field, to the Greene County 31-yard line. On the snap Greene County sends the house blitz that send Favre scrambling for his life. Somehow he finds a streaking Zander Ramono in the back of the end zone. Favre threads the needle, and Ramono slides on his knees and comes up with the scoring toss.

With that pass the career passing touchdown record was Favre's. But, if you were watching him, he was more excited about pulling ahead 21-7 than the record.

When asked about the record after the game he spoke candidely.

"You know, I wasn't as excited as I thought I would be," he said.

The scoring pass would give St. Stanislaus a lead that they wouldn't relinquish, they went on to win the game 42-21.

Favre was 40-48, 506-yards, six touchdowns and one interception on the night.

In the third quarter of the game, Farve hit Boomer Scarborough with a 14 yard strike for a first down that broke Cliford Davis' career passing yards mark (9,309). Farve would end the night with 9,419 career passing yards and 108 career touchdown passes.

"The best thing about all of this is it puts us in the drivers seat to win the region," Favre said.

During the game Sun Herald sports writer Al Jones received at text from Dylan's famous uncle, future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre.

When asked about the congratulations from one of the NFL's all time greats he just kind of laughed.

"He's just another uncle that keeps up with his nephew playing high school football," Favre said. "It's no different than any of these other guys who have uncles that follow them."

Well maybe it is a little different, but not so much when you get to know the Favre family.

After the game Dylan's father Jeff was there along with his uncle Scott and grandmother Bonita were there to take in the moment. They posed for pictures after the game as various media outlets covered the event.

St. Stanislaus head coach Forrest Williams is proud of the way Favre handles the spotlight.

"He was more concerned about winning the game than the records," Williams said. "The only records that we're really concerned about is the most wins in school history, the deepest play-off run in school history and winning a state title."

Last year when Favre was chasing the single season touchdown record it came when the Rocks were in the state play-offs, and it became some what of a distraction for a team that was really feeling success for the first time in a number of years.

"If Dylan gets close to that single season record this year it'll be in the play-offs," Williams said. "We want it to be deep in the play-offs and it won't be as big of a deal."

Right now the Rocks (6-1, 3-0) look to be one of the teams to beat in Class 4A in South Mississippi.
