Gulf Coast edges PRCC in battle of Top 15 teams
PERKINSTON, Miss. - They say football is a game of inches. The saying was definitely true Thursday night in Perkinston.
No. 12 Gulf Coast beat No. 13 Pearl River 17-10 in a game that went down to the final play of the game.
Pearl River began the scroing on its 1st drive of the game. Pacer Frierson connected on a 21 yard field goal with 9:29 left in the 1st quarter, making the score 3-0.
That score would hold at halftime as Pearl River couldnt capitalize on two interceptions. One by Derrick Borune and one by Steve McNair Jr..
In the 2nd half, the Bulldog offense played much better. Taylor Pontius made a 25 yard field goal on the first drive of the 2nd half to tie the game.
The tie wouldn't last long. Three minutes later Pearl River's Melvin German found Jaquaa Peters on a 25 yard touchdown pass. The PAT was good and the score was 10-3, but it would be the last score of the game for the Wildcats.
The Bulldogs would answer with a 1 yard quarterback sneak before the end of the 3rd quarter. Gulf Coast took the lead for good on a one yard run by full back Reginald Matthews with 12:06 left to play. This touchdown drive was aided by 4 defensive persoanl foul penalties on Pearl River.
Pearl River had one more chance. With nine seconds left, at the Gulf Coast 35 yard line, German completed a pass to Jonathan Duncan inside the 5 yard line. It appeared that Duncan got very close to the end zone, but he was ruled him out of bounds as time expired.
Pearl River came within a yard of tying the game as time expired. Football really is a game of inches.
