JUCO tackle offered

Bye week may have been designed to create a small break in the grind of a season, but for coaching staff it means working overtime as they hit the road to see prospects around the nation, and, like today, make offers.

Offensive line coach Will Friend was in Mississippi today to check out Northwest MS CC offensive tackle Donald Hawkins.

Hawkins said he had been talking with Friend in the spring but had lost contact with him over the summer. It wasn't until last week that the Oklahoma State commit started hearing from Georgia again, and now today he has an offer.

"Coach Friend came down and offered me today. He told me that I was the best JUCO tackle in the nation and that they need me," Hawkins said. "He said if I came I would have playing time. He said they'll be losing starters, and two of three of those are tackles."

The 6-foot-5, 320-pound Mississippi native lamented over the fact he only had five officials he could take. Already committed to OSU, he said he'd definitely take his last official there, but some early promises he made has left him with a need to be choosy.

"I have Oklahoma State, and then Kentucky and Kansas State, so I only have two left right now so I have to be real picky," Hawkins said. "I mean, like I only have two left and if I had five it'd be awesome. I picked early because I never knew I'd be getting the offers I have now."

The big man said location is not a factor, and that he just wants to go where he can play to get where he wants to be. He is sticking with his commitment unless otherwise convinced, but he is definitely considering all his options.

Though he had mentioned falling out of contact with Georgia for a while, he said he knows and likes Friend, and that the Dawgs will be vying against its SEC competitors for just one of his two remaining official spots.

"It's a really big decision," Hawkins said. "But I know that it will be one Big 12 school and one SEC school; I just don't know what Big 12 school and what SEC school."

Hawkins said he plans to enroll early, so his final decision will be made no later than the JUCO deadline of Dec. 15.
